For a traditional server or PC installation almost any program should be fine, but using a single-board computer such as a Raspberry Pi, Odroid XU4, or RockPro64 will narrow down the list of compatible media server solutions. Sitting in the audience the first time I got to see a Sins Invalid show, I witnessed some of the most radical work I’d ever seen or imagined. I had recently been approved for federal disability benefits, and though I have a lifelong disability and have been an activist since I was a teenager – and even though I’d spent the past fifteen years doing fat liberation work, and the past five years doing personal work around the legacy of medical trauma in my life – I had not figured out a way to integrate my politics within a bigger framework of disability activism. ![]() Spoken word pieces are offered by Leah Lakshmi (“Dirty River Girl”), Maria Palacios (“The Hunger” and “Vagina Manifesto”), and Aurora Levins Morales.Soon after I moved to San Francisco eight years ago, I was introduced to radical crip artist/activists Leroy Moore and Patty Berne, and the project they founded, Sins Invalid. Nomy Lamm offers two rock-opera pieces involving a “nest of legs” comprised of the prosthetic limbs that she has worn since she was a child. In “The Scene,” Leroy Moore, seeley quest, Ralph Dickinson and Patty Berne enact a sexual encounter in which a dominatrix conducts an erotic medical procedure, captured on live video feed integrated with surreal images. Antoine-DeVinci Hunter, an accomplished deaf choreographer/dancer, asks the audience to share the element of risk he faces every day as a deaf person by rolling a die, each side of which corresponds to a different sound score. Mat Fraser, a celebrated disabled performer from Great Britain offers “No Retreat, No Surrender,” an athletic performance piece using martial arts, and “Beautiful Freak,” a tender cleansing ritual. But Sins Invalid is also, quite simply, a hot, arousing, sexually charged evening of thought-provoking, imaginative sexual entertainment that only happens to be entirely by and about people with disabilities. Sins Invalid challenges its audience to think about sexuality, beauty, and disability in new and expanded ways. What makes Sins Invalid so powerful is that it thoroughly succeeds artistically and erotically, separate from the impact of its political message. In place of the familiar notion that sex, beauty and desirability are limited to people who are young, thin, and physically agile, Sins Invalid offers “a vision of beauty and sexuality inclusive of all individuals and communities,” an affirmation that we are all sexual, all sexy, all attractive, regardless of age, body form, or skin color. “We wanted to address the disconnect between what we know to be true about our beauty and what the world seems to believe - that we are ‘less than,’ undesirable and pitiable,” Berne explains.īut Sins Invalid is more than a statement about sex and disability, going beyond the specific issue of discounting the sexuality of people with disabilities to challenge a whole range of conventional notions about what is normal, what is beautiful, and what is sexy. Sins Invalid was founded in 2006 by Patty Berne and Leroy Moore, two Bay Area activists with disabilities who were frustrated with the propensity of many to view people with disabilities as asexual, deviant, or undesirable. “Each of these artists is in a non-normative body,” Berne notes, “and each is a miraculous, sexual being.”įrank and Linda copyright David Steinberg ![]() “The theme of this year’s show is the magic of embodiment,” says Patty Berne, artistic director of Sins Invalid, “the magic of all life and the spirit incarnate.” The 12 artists in Sins Invalid all possess disabilities, some quite apparent, others less so, such as deafness and environmental illness and injuries. The cabaret-style performances in Sins Invalid range from mild to graphic, from tender to passionate, from the gentle spoken word to a sexually explicit depiction of a scene involving loving dominance and submission. Most specifically, Sins Invalid is about the sexuality of people with physical disabilities - an opportunity for people with disabilities to affirm and celebrate the vibrancy of their sexuality through performance art, theater, film, dance, song, and the spoken word. These are some of the questions addressed in Sins Invalid: An Unashamed Claim to Beauty in the Face of Invisibility, whose fourth annual multi-media presentation is being performed this coming weekend at the Brava Theater. ![]() Gayle and David Sins Invalid copyright: David Steinberg ![]() ![]() There aren’t many action/adventure games on the Wii, but in the small class of options Rygar excels. This is the type of game that anyone can pick up and play and have a good time. Being a virgin to the series the ease of play and amount of enjoyment truly surprised me. Definitely a nice touch, but still not worth taking a second dip if you have already experienced this game when it was released on the PS2.Įven though the game feels dated (and looks it too), Rygar: The Battle of Argus is extremely fun. The short of it is it’s a survival mode that has you battling waves of baddies for thirty levels. You pretty much just use it as a finishing blow by swinging the Wiimote, but the motion controls have a bigger role in the new mode that has been added to this interpretation: Gladiator Mode. The game does take advantage of the Wii’s motion controls but it’s not widely used in the story mode. It’s also worth noting that if you abhor traveling down different paths that don’t follow the main quest, these side paths do usually lead you back to where you started, eliminating any sense of backtracking. You have nothing to lose: chances are you will find a hidden artifact or you might find enemies that keep respawning (and either way, you come out with something as some enemies you defeat drop items). ![]() So, as you enter a level and there are multiple paths in which to traverse, I recommend going down each one. At its heart, it is a hack and slash game, but, as mentioned a couple paragraphs ago, it mixes in quite a bit of exploration. So is there more to Rygar: The Battle of Argus, you ask? Yes, but not too much more. However, the story and the facts about that time era that you find, really help keep this game interesting if you are into mythology. Don’t get your hopes up for first-class voice acting though as comes across pretty lame. I mean, it’s far from the best looking game on the Wii, but it is also far from being the worst looking. Graphically, the game isn’t that impressive, but seeing as how Nintendo decided that graphics aren’t what make the game (and I agree), Tecmo did a good job working with what they had to make a decent looking game. I love hacking and slashing, but I also like a little strategy in my boss battles. For example, I defeated the first boss by walking up to it and just mashing buttons while watching their health plummet. Usually there is no set strategy involved in defeating them. They really aren’t amusing and can be frustrating at times. The only real downside to the combat is the boss fights. Now there will be attacks that simply can’t be blocked, but Rygar has other moves to avoid more powerful attacks, and as you can imagine you will find these abilities by searching the levels. It as simple as pushing the C button that’s it. I find myself destroying everything I can as I go through levels (this is not only fun, but also a way to find upgrades for your weapon).Īlright now that I have covered the offense it’s time for the defense the defense. On top of that, the environment is destructible and let me tell you, knocking down pillars and destroying other things in the environment is extremely satisfying. ![]() ![]() Of course they can also be used to chain together combos that can be pretty devastating. The A and B buttons are used as a normal and a heavy attack respectively. The combat works well with the diskarmor and is really simplistic. There are items you can pick up to make your trusty weapon more powerful, and even three different types of diskarmor you earn on your quest, each with its own different abilities. Essentially it is a round (shaped like a shield) disc with blades all around it and is attached to a handle similar to a mace. This is probably one of the coolest weapons I have used in an action/adventure game. He does however implement some pretty cool things along the way, mainly with his trusty diskarmor weapon. The story really isn’t that unique: Rygar is assigned the task of the tired mission to save the princess. Rygar takes place in the mythological Roman Empire. The question is will you find reason to don the diskarmor once again? Brawl is one of the best fighting games this generation, and now Tecmo has released Rygar: The Battle of Argus which is another game that has been picked up, remade and found a home in the thwarting arms of the Wii. Mario Kart is one of the better racing games on any console. While their competitors chose to widely advance their hardware, Nintendo decided to introduce a new way to play games, and quite a few games have utilized this motion sensor technology rather well. ![]() |
